Agentic AI in China

In recent years, China has made significant progress in the field of agentic AI. Agentic AI systems are designed to independently perform tasks and dynamically adapt to new situations. In China, they are seen as a major trend and are expected to play a central role in the coming years.

Leading Chinese technology companies such as Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent, and ByteDance have created extensive development platforms for AI agents. These platforms enable businesses and developers to create specialized agents for various application scenarios. For example, Baidu’s AI agent platform ERNIE already includes over 150,000 companies and 800,000 developers building their own agents.

Smaller AI startups in China are also focusing on agentic AI applications in specific areas. The company Zhipu AI recently introduced AutoGLM, an AI agent app that allows users to order food via voice command on their smartphone. The app plans and executes the required steps independently without further user intervention. Another example is the development of Deepseek V3, one of the world’s most powerful open-source AI models. This model outperforms competitors like GPT-4 and Llama 3.1 in various benchmark tests, showcasing China’s ability to develop advanced AI technologies.

The Chinese government actively supports these developments and has set a goal to become a global leader in artificial intelligence by 2030. This strategic focus promotes the integration of AI across various industries and drives innovation in the field. German companies with branches in China face increasing pressure to enhance their efficiency and competitiveness there. Many are expected to rely on local resources by integrating Chinese agentic AI systems into their business processes.
